Welding qualification assistant

ASME BPVC Section IX — 2025 Edition

Offline assistant for welding, brazing and fusing qualifications. Calculators apply the qualification-range rules of the code; lookups index the P-Number, F-Number and variable-classification tables.

This is an unofficial, offline reference tool. Results must be verified against your licensed copy of ASME BPVC Section IX. It grants no ASME certification and reproduces no code text.

Procedure qualification thickness ranges

Enter T and t to compute the qualified ranges.

Notes

  • QW-403.9 (single pass over 13 mm) and the supplementary-essential variables referenced in QW-250 may further restrict these ranges; QW-202.2–202.4 exemptions supersede them.
  • Fillet welds: a groove-weld qualification qualifies all fillet sizes on all thicknesses and diameters (Table QW-451.4).
  • Combination of procedures: see QW-200.4.

Alternate F-Numbers (QW-433)

Heat input

H = (V × A × 60 × η) / v — enter any three known values.
  • QW-409.1 (supplementary essential variable) is an increase in heat input; 60 converts minutes to seconds so H is in J/unit length.
  • Waveform-controlled machines: see Nonmandatory Appendix H for heat-input determination.

Base metal P-Number lookup

Spec Grade / type UNS Min tensile ksi (MPa) P-No. Group Composition / form
Includes the brazing P-No. column for joints qualified for brazing. Materials not listed are unassigned — see QW-421/QW-422.

Filler metal F-Numbers

F-No. SFA spec AWS classification UNS

Ferrous weld metal A-Numbers

A-No. Weld deposit type C %Cr %Mo %Ni %Mn %Si %
Single values are maxima; only listed elements determine the A-Number (QW-442).

WPS essential variables by process

E S N E = essential, S = supplementary essential, N = nonessential
  • Special-process (overlay) variables are in tables QW-253.1 … QW-257.1; hybrid welding in QW-220; performance variables for welders/operators in QW-35x/QW-36x.
  • Symbols: ϕ change, + addition, − deletion, > increase, < decrease, ↑↓ vertical up/down, ± add or delete.
